Throughout the blogosphere & social media, I see people sharing things they’ve learned throughout 2017 and what they’d hope to expect in 2018. Jumping on the bandwagon a little too late. I told myself that regardless the publish date of this post, I wanted to share a piece of myself that is a little more personal on this platform. So here it goes!
2017 started off pretty enthusiastic for me. Just like any other new year, I write down my goals for the year and make plans on how I’d like to achieve them (yep – I’m a planner????). I’m glad to say that I’ve stayed on with my resolutions pretty well.
However, what is life if things go perfectly according to plan? There were definitely ups and downs. Loads of anxious nights worrying about things that might not happen. Lots of unexpected turn of events and such. I am not going to bore you guys with the details. That is not the point of this post.
Anyway, moving on.. As what most Chinese families in Asia do every new year, they seek out Feng Shui readings. Now, I’m not entirely sure if I believe in it, but my mum gets a reading for me every year. So what did it say?? It stated that 2017 was a bad year for me. That I should “lay low” and not attempt anything new (be it business or projects). Well, in true Melissa fashion, I rejected the notion and took it as a challenge. I wanted to prove to myself that things don’t just happen to you. You have control over your life.
Well, I’m glad the stubbornness paid off!
- My girlfriends and I launched Recyclothes, a non-profit organisation that supports sustainable fashion (link). We sell secondhand clothes to raise funds for various charities.
- I launched my blog! Despite the neverending IT complications beforehand.
- I started my YouTube channel!! (Initially wanted to do it in 2018 but so glad I didn’t “wait for the right time”! There’s no “right time” with these things. Believe in yourself!)
- Finally took a leap of faith to make social media (Blogging/YouTube/Instagram) my full-time job!
- Last but not least, reignited my passion for styling and creating content for you guys!
Not too shabby for a “bad year” hey.
Just a little disclaimer: I’m in no way discriminating any beliefs by saying this. If you choose to follow Feng Shui, by all means, do what’s best for you. Don’t let my personal challenge to myself affect you and your choices. You do you! ????
So you see, 2017 looked rather good on paper. What others don’t see are the obstacles. And trust me, there were plenty. In today’s world, people filter their lives all the time. So one thing I’m extremely excited to see on social media that challenges the status quo is the women empowerment movement! 2018 is going to be huge for such a movement. Women are not silenced as they were once before. They’re pushing boundaries and social norms. Women owning their unique beauty. Women fighting for the right to education. There are so many inspiring women out there to look up to! And I am glad to be part of an era that encourages women to support and empower.
I read a post on Elle’s blog that inspired me to write this today. Women are encouraged to stop judging each other. We’re in 2018. Let’s focus on spreading positive energy wherever we go #goodvibesonly.
So I guess indirectly this is me saying that 2018 is going to be a year of change. This is the year for making things happen. Instead of a long list of new year’s resolution, this year I decided to just live by a mantra:
W O R K H A R D & M A K E I T H A P P E N !!
That is all today guys! Let me know your thoughts on this post. I know it’s different from my usual content. Always looking to try something different! 2018 will be a more personal year for me and I hope to share it with you guys ????
